IPHONE 14 RELEASE DATE

We can’t be sure when the iPhone 14 will be released, but if we take a look at Apple’s history, we can make a pretty good guess. New models are usually announced around the same time each year, usually at a special event.

The new iPhone 13 was unveiled on September 14, 2021, and started shipping on September 24. While we may not see the iPhone 14 on those exact dates in 2022, Apple usually unveils new models on either the first or second Tuesday in September, which would be either September 6 or September 13.

Then, typically, pre-orders go up on the Friday of that week- either September 9 or 16. The shipment usually follows the next Friday, so September 16 or 23.

Apple is likely to announce the new iPhones on the first or second Wednesday in October, with the iPhone 12 range being the exception due to Covid-19 delays and supply issues.

So far, it looks like there will be no delays this year, with trial production already underway (as of late February) and engineering validation apparently complete (as of late March). This is on schedule.

IPHONE 14 PRICE

We’ve heard one iPhone 14 price leak which detailed four members of the new range – including a Max but no Mini.

Apparently, the base phone will start at $799, just like the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 Max will cost $100 more than that. We’ve heard that the iPhone 14 will have a similar starting price to the iPhone 13.

It is rumored that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will cost $1,099 and $1,199 respectively, which would be an increase of $100 from the previous generation.

IPHONE 14 DESIGN

One big leak has revealed the unofficial renders of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which indicates a major design change for the upcoming iPhone 14.

The punch-hole camera on the phone below is a new way to do Face ID, with the components presumably under the screen. The camera on this phone is nearly flush with the back, rather than having a noticeable bump. This is apparently achieved by making the phone thicker.

The back of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is semi-glossy glass, with round volume buttons. The sides appear to be made of titanium, rather than stainless steel. The triple-lens camera and Lightning port are still in place.

The colors shown here aren’t the only ones available for the new iPhone 14 Pro models- rumor has it that there is also a rose gold model! It’s also worth noting that this design is thought to only apply to the Pro models, with the iPhone 14 (and iPhone 14 Max if there is one) likely to still have a notch. So far, it’s not clear which other design details from the Pro models will make it to the standard models.

The prediction that Apple will remove the notch from their iPhone 14 Pro range is from Jon Prosser, who has a mixed track record, although the iPhone 14 Pro range will still have a notch (albeit a smaller one), it’s unclear whether it will also have a punch-hole. One thing is for sure – the iPhone 14 Pro range has a mixed track record.

Another leaker has spoken up to say that they too believe the camera cut-out will be pill-shaped, suggesting it might be bigger than most punch-hole cameras.

Supply-chain expert Ross Young believes that the company will adopt a “hole + pill” design for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This will result in a pill-shaped cutout, as well as a smaller hole that will still be visible – a theory backed up by a leaked schematic cutout.

As more sources have come to agree with this, leaked CAD renders below show this design too, though without the rear camera changes visible further up.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max might have a slightly bigger camera bump than the iPhone 13 Pro range, according to leaked schematics. This is said to be due to the new 48MP sensor being used (more on which below).

Although Gurman has said that the iPhone 14 range will include a small notch, it’s still not clear whether he means an actual punch-hole or just a small notch. Even though the design is unclear, there is still some uncertainty.

Some have speculated that the Pro models may use a titanium alloy for their frame, which would be stronger than the materials used in current models. There is also talk of an iPhone 14 Max instead of an iPhone 14 mini.

IPHONE 14 DISPLAY

According to reputable leaker Ming-Chi Kuo, there will be two 6.1-inch iPhone 14 models (a standard one and a Pro), and two 6.7-inch ones (a Pro Max and a Max).

We’ve also heard more detailed screen specs from Ross Young (another leaker with a good track record). Young claims that the iPhone 14 will have a 6.06-inch 1170 x 2532 OLED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate and 460 pixels per inch. The iPhone 14 Pro will apparently have similar screen specs, but with a 120Hz variable refresh rate.

Then the iPhone 14 Pro Max is said to have a 6.68-inch 1284 x 2778 OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and 458 pixels per inch. The iPhone 14 Max is apparently going to have the same screen specs as the mini, but with a 60Hz refresh rate.

Another source has also suggested that the two cheaper models will have 60Hz screens, just like in the current range. However, we’ve more recently heard that Apple is considering a 120Hz screen for the iPhone 14 Max. It’s unclear if a decision has been made yet.

A recent leak has suggested that all four iPhone 14 models could have 120Hz screens. This would be a huge upgrade from the current 60Hz screens, and it’s something that many Android flagships have had for a while. We’re not sure if this is true or not, but it’s certainly possible.

And there’s also a patent for a technology that could make the iPhone screen stronger, without making it any thicker. That would be a nice addition, but patents often don’t turn into anything, so don’t count on seeing this.

IPHONE 14 CAMERA

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is rumored to have a triple-lens camera, and another source points to the iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Max also has a triple-lens camera. The iPhone 14, meanwhile, is said to stick with two lenses.

Although the iPhone 13 range may not sound like much of a change, the new lenses and sensors could make all the difference.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, has claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will each have a 48MP main camera, up from 12MP on the current models. The third model, the iPhone 14, will upgrade its main camera to a 32MP sensor. This would be capable of recording an 8K video, which is something he reiterated in December 2021. He seems very confident in this.

Adding to the speculation, another analyst has also claimed that both Pro models in 2022 will feature 48MP cameras. This isn’t confirmation, but it does add more credibility to Kuo’s original claim.

There are also rumors of a periscope camera in the works (for long-range optical zoom). We’ve even seen a patent supporting these claims  Currently, most sources suggest this is further out probably landing on the iPhone 15 or later.

IPHONE 14 SPECS AND FEATURES

There is one thing we can be almost certain of and that is that the iPhone 14 range will have a new chipset. This new chipset is most likely going to be called the A16 or the A16 Bionic. According to Ross Young, this new chipset would be made on a 4nm process. This suggests that it could be a reasonable boost on the 5nm A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13 range.

According to DigiTimes, the process could even be moved down to 3nm, making it even more efficient.

Although we’ve recently heard that a 5nm process could be used again, TSMC (the company that’s producing the chipset) is apparently struggling to switch to a 3nm (or 4nm) process.

We’ve also heard that potentially only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max would get this chipset, with the basic models being stuck with the A15 Bionic. This could mean that the Pro models would have a significantly faster processor than the basic models. However, this could mean that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max would be the only models to get the new chipset. According to multiple sources, every model of the upcoming release is expected to have 6GB of RAM, a split in chipsets.

According to another leak, both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will feature 8GB of RAM. This would be an upgrade from the 6GB of RAM that has been seen on previous iPhones. However, it is unclear if this applies to all models or just the Pro versions.

The Pro models of the iPhone 13 have increased the maximum amount of internal storage you can buy from 512MB to 1TB, We’re hearing that the iPhone 14 Pro could double the storage capacity of the iPhone 13 Pro – all the way to 2TB. With twice the storage capacity, the iPhone 14 Pro would be able to store twice as much data as the previous model.

Beyond that, some sources reckon we could see under-display Touch ID on the iPhone 14, although Mark Gurman is a great source for Apple information, it seems that the company is now fully committed to Face ID, so it’s unlikely that this feature will be implemented – if it is, it will likely be in addition to Face ID, rather than as a replacement.

Under-display Face ID is looking less and less likely as another source has stated that it won’t happen.

Apple is reportedly considering a switch from a Lightning port to USB-C for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but as yet only one source has pointed in this direction, so we’re skeptical.

The iPhone 14 range is sure to include 5G support, while a new patent suggests it might also have a new form of 3D Touch. This would use haptic feedback to make interactions more intuitive. However, as with all patents, we cannot be sure if this will actually be included in the final product.

There is also talk that Apple could switch from a physical SIM card to an eSIM (which you wouldn’t be able to remove). The iPhone 13 range already has this but it’s in addition to a physical one, not instead. Apple may go eSIM-only with the iPhone 14, but it will likely offer models that have both kinds.

IPHONE 14 BATTERY

It seems like there could be improvements made to the battery life of the next models of phones, with one source saying the battery will be larger, and another saying the phones will be thicker- which could create more space for a larger battery.

When it comes time to charge your iPhone, you might be making use of a MagSafe charger rather than the Lightning port, based on one patent. Unofficial renders show the Lightning port intact, though it’s not clear how Apple would implement this feature.
